Veterinary Acupuncture
Techniques Used
When we talk about acupuncture, we immediately think of needles. However, there are various techniques that can be employed to enhance and improve the treatment. Depending on the patient and their needs, one or more of these techniques are chosen:
Needles
The classic acupuncture treatment involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body. This procedure does not cause pain or stress in the patients. The insertion points of the needles depend on the individual diagnosis of each animal. Local points can be used, which help stimulate healing in the treated area. For a deeper and more comprehensive treatment, and after a thorough diagnosis according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, specific points corresponding to the meridians, the organs they stimulate, and the theory of the five elements are selected.
Moxa
Moxibustion is a technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves burning dried leaves of Artemisia (Artemisia abrotanum) to heat and stimulate one or more acupuncture points. It can be used alone or in combination with acupuncture needles to enhance therapeutic effects.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
This technique involves injecting platelet-rich plasma into one or more acupuncture points to stimulate the body. To perform this technique, blood is drawn from the patient, which is then placed in a centrifuge. Once centrifuged, the plasma with the highest concentration of platelets is separated and injected into specific acupuncture points.
Laser
In some cases, it is not possible to apply needles to certain acupuncture points due to the size of the animal, its condition, or the delicate location of the point. In these cases, a laser with a tip specially designed for acupuncture is used. The laser produces an effect similar to that of a needle.
Other Techniques
To stimulate acupuncture points, substances such as vitamins, serums, or homeopathic treatments can also be injected. The desired effect will depend on the chosen substance and the patient's needs.
Electroacupuncture
This technique involves stimulating certain acupuncture points with small electric currents. First, needles are inserted into the desired points, and then they are connected to a device designed for electroacupuncture that alternates different electric currents. It is mainly used to stimulate the nervous and musculoskeletal systems and is especially useful in cases of paralysis and paresis.
